Bolstered by strong word of mouth, Hokum held up reasonably well in its second weekend, dropping 48% from week 1 and grossing about $3.3 million. Hokum cost $5 million to produce and has now grossed about $15 million worldwide. It’s a profitable venture for Neon, a distributor with a solid history of success with horror films.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy narrowly missed another weekend in the top ten, finishing in 11th place with about $560K. The sleeper hit has grossed over $86 million worldwide on a $22 million budget, quietly becoming one of horror’s biggest success stories of the year so far.

Although the upcoming month is packed with new horror releases, there were no other major genre flicks making an impact at the box office this weekend. To keep this post from being ridiculously short, I’ll discuss Mortal Kombat II, which premiered last Friday.

The Mortal Kombat series falls mainly into the action category, but it’s horror adjacent. The sequel grossed an estimated $40 million in its opening weekend, finishing in second place. It’s grossed $63 million worldwide.

With an $80 million budget (not including marketing costs), Mortal Kombat II still has work to do to turn a profit, but this is a nice start.

The heavily anticipated Obsession hits theaters this week. The social media buzz is strong for this one. Extremely positive early reviews have added even more fire to this movie’s hype machine. Focus Features is hoping for a smashing opening weekend before it faces competition from Passengers and Backrooms later in the month.
