Horror at the Box Office: The Mummy Shuffles Into 3rd Place

Warner Bros Pictures

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy lurched past most of the competition and notched a third place finish in a surprisingly successful opening weekend. It grossed an estimated $13.5 million domestically and $34 million worldwide. The Mummy has a $22 million budget, so this is a great start.

Reviews were mixed at best, but that didn’t stop audiences from flocking to this one. Maybe Rotten Tomato scores just don’t matter anymore.

Compared to other recent films based on classic Universal Monsters, The Bride! grossed $23 million earlier this year, Wolf Man grossed $35 million in 2025 and The Invisible Man made $144 million in 2020. The Mummy is already rolling past Wolf Man and the Bride!. The Invisible Man‘s total might be out of reach, but we’ll have to see how The Mummy holds up in its second weekend and beyond.

There wasn’t much else going on for horror at the box office this week. You have to go all the way down to 15th place to find the next genre movie, Ready or Not 2, which grossed $340K to increase its total to about $23 million in North America and $40 million worldwide against a budget of $14 million.

Faces of Death plunged 82% in its second weekend and finished in 16th place with an estimated $300K and $2.4 million total. This will be completely out of theaters soon.

The next major horror release is Hokum on May 1st. I’ve already covered this movie multiple times, but for a brief recap, Hokum stars Adam Scott (Severance) as an author who travels to rural Ireland to spread his parents’ ashes.

He discovers that his rental home is haunted by a sinister presence. Damien McCarthy (Oddity) directs.
