First Look at Maika Monroe in the Victorian Psycho Movie!

Let the hype begin! The first image of Maika Monroe in the Victorian Psycho movie adaptation has been released. Monroe plays Winifred Nottie, the delightfully demented protagonist of the sardonically humorous novel, which I reviewed last year.

Margaret Qualley was originally cast in the role. She would have been great, but Monroe should be just as good. She already has experience playing a similar character in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake.

Can Monroe pull off a British accent? We’ll have to wait for the trailer to find that out, but I’m sure she’ll do a great job as Winifred. Speaking of good casting, the film costars Jason Isaacs as Mr. Pounds, Winifred’s wealthy and snobbish employer. Isaacs is going to be perfect as this guy.

The distributor has also released the poster, shown below, and the release date: September 25th, near the beginning of the Halloween season. The book climaxes on Christmas, so I thought they might release it a bit later in the year, but late September is certainly a good slot for a horror movie.

I like the poster. It has a suitably dark, haunting aesthetic. A bloody hand (presumably Winifred’s) holding a bloodstained wine glass is a fitting image for this story of carnage, chaos, and the perils of social stratification in Victorian England.

It will be interesting to see if Winifred is as evil in the movie as she is in the book. The filmmakers may be tempted to make her more likeable, but I’m hoping that they have the guts to avoid toning her down at all.

With the release date five months away, it hopefully won’t be long until we get a teaser trailer. That will tell us much more about what to expect.
