VHS Halloween Hits Shudder in October!

Exciting news for fans of the VHS franchise! Shudder is releasing the latest installment, VHS Halloween, this October. This will be the successor to VHS Beyond (2024), an alien-themed installment that earned a mostly positive review from me.
It’s the eighth installment in the series. There are also two spinoff films, SiREN and Kids vs. Aliens.
Five of the previous seven films were released in October, but this is the first explicitly Halloween-themed movie in the series. Details on the segments are scant thus far, but we do know which directors are involved. As usual, they are mainly lesser known filmmakers.
The exception is Paco Plaza, the director of the found footage zombie movie REC. He fits the VHS series like a glove. The others are Casper Kelly, Alex Ross Perry, Anna Zlokovic, Micheline Pitt-Norman & R.H. Norman, and Bryan Ferguson.
This series has a pretty good track record with choosing young, eager filmmakers. Of this group, I’m most intrigued by Ferguson, who directed an acclaimed short film called Pumpkin Guts – a microbudget ’80s-set slasher about a babysitter who hears the doorbell ring and finds a pumpkin sitting on her front porch on Halloween night.
Despite a runtime of less than 15 minutes, this movie manages to effectively mix elements from slashers, body horror, and folk horror together. I wouldn’t be surprised if his VHS segments turns out to be a sequel to this movie.
The VHS franchise kicked off in 2012 and has become one of the mainstays in the found footage subgenre. VHS Halloween haunts Shudder starting on October 3rd. There’s no trailer as of yet.
VHS Beyond was released on October 4, 2024, and the trailer came out on September 24th. We’ll likely get a similar timeframe here, unless Shudder wants to drive up the hype by releasing the trailer earlier.
