My Undertone Movie Trailer Breakdown

After a rough 2025 in horror, A24 is aiming to bounce back this year. Their marketing campaign ramped up this week with the release of the Undertone movie trailer.
Undertone is about Evy (Nina Kiri), a paranormal podcaster who hosts a podcast with her buddy Justin (Kris Holden-Ried). She’s the skeptic and he’s the believer, the Mulder to her Scully.
Evy moves back to her childhood home to take care of her terminally ill mother. While there, she receives anonymous creepy recordings of a married couple experiencing unusual noises in their home. The terrifying recordings shake Evy to the core, forcing her to question her beliefs about the supernatural.
The movie uses an intriguing gimmick: most of the characters never appear onscreen. We only hear their voices. Will this make the movie creepier?
Undertone Movie Trailer Breakdown
-0:00-0:30 – Evy starts the trailer in full skeptic mode, acting dismissive of the tapes that she and Justin have received.
-0:39-1:04 – Evy makes the mistake of listening to the tapes at night. The seemingly random assortment of noises and voices remind me of Billy’s eerie incoherent phone calls in Black Christmas.
-1:35-1:41 – In probably the trailer’s most spoilery moment, Evy’s unconscious and dying mother suddenly awakens and begins to rise out of bed. Is she possessed by the entity heard on the tapes?
1:55-1:20 – “You shouldn’t have called out to her. That’s what she wants.” Has Evy unwittingly released a demon by listening to the recordings?
Overall, this looks like a combination of Paranormal Activity, The Exorcist, and A Quiet Place.
Undertone releases domestically on March 13th which, yes, is a Friday the 13th. Here’s the trailer:
