Horror at the Box Office: Undertone Starts Strong

Undertone was the top grossing horror film at the box office this past weekend, earning $9.3 million and a third place finish overall. With critics hyping it as the scariest movie of the year, Undertone scored a solid debut, especially considering its $500K production budget. A24 had a rough run with horror flicks last year, so this is certainly welcome good news for them.
Scream 7 declined 51% in its third weekend, grossing $8.3 million and increasing its domestic total past the century mark at $106 million. That’s a decent performance for a third weekend slasher flick, especially considering the negative reviews. Still, Scream 7 is likely approaching its final domestic gross. It’s hard to imagine it making much more, especially with Ready or Not 2 coming out.
The Bride! predictably tanked even harder in its second weekend, dropping a whopping 70%. It has now earned a total of about $11.3 million domestically. With a reported budget in the $80 million range, this is a costly flop for Warner Bros, who had great success for horror movies last year.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come races into theaters on Friday. I’m really hoping that Kathryn Newton, one of my favorite scream queens, finally gets a bona fide hit. She’s had rotten luck with box office performance throughout her career.
Not to mention that her Netflix series, The Society, was initially renewed for a second season and then was abruptly canceled because of the pandemic. This girl needs a break!
Will Ready or Not 2 join Scream 7 and Send Help in the 2026 Horror Movies to Open at #1 Club? That might be a stretch, but the sequel is expected to notch a solid opening in the $11 million range. The original Ready or Not opened with $8 million.
