Is The Monkey Stephen King Movie Going to be Worth Watching?
Monkey Business!
A new trailer for The Monkey has been released! The film releases on February 21st. Oz Perkins, the director of somber chillers like Longlegs and The Blackcoat’s Daughter, is taking on the adaption of this notoriously creepy Stephen King short story.
Two brothers have been terrorized by a maniacal wind-up toy monkey since they were kids. They try to destroy it, but it keeps coming back. Now, as adults, they must reunite to confront their childhood nemesis in a bloody battle to the death.
The Monkey is being produced by James Wan (Saw, Conjuring, Insidious) so that would indicate we’re in for a dark and creepy experience. The trailer certainly doesn’t hold back on the gore! This cymbal-smashing monkey flat out refuses go away, no matter how hard people try to get rid of it.
We have been chosen to witness its power over life and death.
Osgood and Wan should make a good team, but the cast is a question mark. To be honest, I’m not familiar with most of them. There are two big names in the cast: Elijah Wood and Tatiana Maslany.
Wood has been in a number of horror-related projects in recent years, most notably the Showtime series Yellowjackets. Tatiana Maslany plays She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Watch in Theaters, Wait for Streaming, Or Pass?
Film adaptions of Stephen King’s works have had a mixed history, to say the least. Lately, though, there have been more hits than misses. The Monkey appears capable of continuing that trend.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, I think that The Monkey will be worth watching on the big screen. It seems like the type of movie that will be enhanced by seeing it with a crowd. It’ll be interesting to see what the early reviews have to say, but everything looks promising!
Recommendation: Watch in Theaters
