The Jester 2 Trailer Breakdown

The Jester 2 is the hopefully improved sequel to The Jester (2023), a cheap Terrifier knockoff that received negative reviews from critics, including me. The first movie is subpar, but the Jester character is intriguing. His costume and mask are well designed and creepy.

In fact, this villain has managed to build a small cult following. The enigmatic slasher first starred in series of YouTube shorts prior to his feature film debut. My review of the first film is consistently one of the most viewed posts on this site, so clearly there’s some interest in this guy.

The Jester 2 is receiving a limited theatrical release this week. There’s no official word on streaming yet, but the first one is still available on Shudder. My guess is that part 2 will find a home there in October.

What does this sequel have in store for us? Will it provide some fun mindless Halloween entertainment? Let’s take a look!

The Jester 2 Trailer Breakdown

0:01-0:25 – The trailer starts off with a nice spooky scene, with the Jester climbing out of a box and apparently replacing his old mask with a fresh new one. It sets the Halloween atmosphere well.

0:28-0:52 – The protagonist and presumed final girl of the movie is introduced. Max (Kaitlyn Trentham) is an eccentric teen magician who is bullied by her classmates. The Jester loves performing tricks, so having him battle a magician is a nice idea. Their relationship has some level of complexity. It appears that Max and Jester form an alliance of sorts.

With the Jester’s similarity to Art the Clown, I have to wonder if Max is supposed to this series’ answer to Sienna Shaw. Max already seems way more interesting than any of the characters from the first movie. But matching Sienna, one of my favorite final girls of all time, would be a monumentally difficult task.

`1:03-1:07 – A menacing voice over is heard. Is this supposed to The Jester speaking? He was silent in the first movie. This interview with director Colin Krawchuk, who also directed the first film, implies that Jester is still silent in the sequel, so I’m not sure what’s going on here.

1:22-1:28 – Max gets dragged down a hole. Is she taking an unwanted trip to the Jester’s secret lair?

Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but this has a chance to be pretty decent. It certainly looks better than the first. The Jester 2 is currently in a limited theatrical run this week. Streaming release TBA.
