My Sinners Trailer Reaction: Lots of Intrigue, Too Many Spoilers
The new Sinners trailer is out, and it reveals key info about the highly anticipated Michael B. Jordan film. Twin brothers, both played by Jordan, return home to find that their sweltering southern town has been corrupted by ancient evil. The film is set in the South in the 1930s. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) is directing and Hailee Steinfeld co-stars.
The first Sinners trailer, which was released in September, is deliberately vague about the film’s premise. Now, we’re getting a much clearer picture of what this movie is about. Honestly, it would have been admirable if Warner Bros had refused to release any information about the film’s storyline beforehand.
That would be an obvious risk, from a marketing perspective, but a movie with Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and Hailee Stenfield already has a built-in audience. This film should be a box office success based on the cast and crew alone, so why spoil anything?
We gonna kill every last one of ya!
In any case, the new trailer reveals that the brothers’ hometown has been infested by vampires. Yes, Sinners is a vampire western. This may seem like an odd combo, but it has worked before: Near Dark and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, for example.
We see a series of vampire shenanigans in the trailer. Some of the human characters are shown turning into bloodsuckers (another unnecessary spoiler) and there’s a long shot of Michael B. Jordan firing a hail of bullets at somebody. Is he armed with silver? Conventional ammunition doesn’t usually work on vamps!
With this being set in the Jim Crow South, it’s a safe bet that Sinners will feature themes related to racism and segregation. Is Coogler using vampires as an allegory to discuss these issues?
Despite my criticism of the spoilers in trailer 2, I’m still eagerly looking forward to watching Sinners. It has a real chance to be one of the top horror movies of 2025.
Sinners comes out on April 18th. Here’s the trailer:
