A Sinners Oscars Bonanza!

A Record Horror Haul
Sinners racked up a record 16 Oscar nominations when the Academy Awards nominations were announced today. The Sinners Oscars total includes Best Picture and Best Director.
Last year, I wrote a list of the few horror and thriller movies that have been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (including the sole winner, The Silence of the Lambs). Now we have two more films to add to that historic list. Along with Sinners, Frankenstein also has earned a nomination.
This is the first time ever that two horror movies are nominated for Best Picture in the same year! This continues the trend of horror movies performing well during the 2026 awards season.
It’s anyone’s guess how many of the Sinners Oscars nominations will result in victories. But with more nominations than any other film, Sinners should have a legitimate shot at becoming the Best Picture winner.
If Ryan Coogler wins Best Director, he will join Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) as the only directors who have won that award for a horror film.
In other notable news, The Ugly Stepsister is the first Shudder-distributed film to earn an Oscar nomination – best hair and makeup.
Personally, these nominations make me much more interested in watching the Academy Awards. The Oscars don’t pull in the huge ratings that they once did, but perhaps they will draw a wider audience this year – at least as horror fans are concerned.
