Jenna Ortega in Single White Female Remake?
According to Variety, Jenna Ortega is in talks to co-star in a Single White Female remake. The Sony project is currently in the early stages, with no word on who will direct yet.
The original Single White Female is a dark 1992 erotic thriller about Allison (Bridget Fonda), a New Yorker who seeks a new roommate after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend. After kicking him out of their apartment, the lonely Manhattanite puts an advertisement in the newspaper (for the kids out there, this is what people did before the internet).
Many women apply, but Allison picks quirky Hedra (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Her new roomie seems endearing at first, but she turns out to be a deranged psycho who turns Allison’s life into a nightmare.
Along with Ortega, Variety reports that Taylor Russell (Bones and All) is in talks to co-star. It’s unclear which role each actress will play. My guess is that Russell will play the protagonist and Ortega will play the villain. Ortega has played plenty of dark roles, so she would make sense as the creepy roommate.
What’s The Title Going to Be?
If Ortega and Russell are starring, they obviously can’t call this movie Single White Female. If Russell is playing Allison, as I suspect, then Single Black Female would work. Or they could dispense with the original title entirely and call it Bad Roommate!
A remake of a mildly popular thriller from over 30 years ago doesn’t seem necessary, but with these two in the lead roles, and a good director, it could be worth watching. It would be interesting to see them update the story for the 2020s.
