Scream 7 News: Filming Begins!
Ghostface is Back Again!
After several delays, rewrites, and casting changes, the filming of the latest iteration of the Scream franchise has finally commenced! Director Kevin Williamson posted the latest Scream 7 news on Instagram.
Scream 7 (it’s unclear if this will be the film’s actual title) is scheduled to be released on February 27, 2026. It will star Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. Campbell is returning to the series after sitting out of Scream VI.
Unfortunately, the new installment will not feature Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega. I would have liked to see the Carpenter sisters get one more installment but, alas, it was not meant to be.
Mason Gooding will reprise his role as Chad, so there will be some continuity with the previous two movies. Courtney Cox, the only actor to appear in every Scream movie, is returning as well.
Details about the plot remain sketchy, but it will presumably involve Ghostface tracking down Sydney, who is now a wife and mother. There will undoubtedly be a new crop of bumbling teenagers for Ghostface to hack and slash through.
Of course, it’s a safe bet that there will be plenty of meta references to horror films and contemporary genre trends. Maybe this installment could find a way to spoof gothic and folk horror movies?
Can Williamson Direct?
Other than the plot, my biggest question about this installment is how Williamson will perform as the director. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a fitting choice to helm the latest installment.
After all, he‘s the guy who started it all. His clever and innovative script helped the original Scream become a massive success. He has also been involved in varying capacities in most of the sequels.
Williamson is an accomplished screenwriter, but he has little directorial experience. In fact, the only previous film he’s helmed is Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999), a critically panned box office disaster.
Should we be concerned that Williamson’s only previous director credit was a horrible flop from 25 years ago? Unfortunately, I think the answer is yes.
Williamson is a great screenwriter, but he’s unproven, at best, in the director’s chair. Hopefully he’s learned a thing or two over the past couple decades.
In any case, I hope that Scream 7 (or whatever it ends up being called) is a success. To me, this is one of the most consistent horror franchises. I can’t stand Scream 3 (seriously, I absolutely despise that movie) but I like all of the other installments. Yes, even the fourth one. I even enjoyed that silly MTV Scream series.
Anyway, here’s to hoping that the seventh Scream is worth the wait! Check back here for more Scream 7 news as it becomes available!
