Shocking New Scream 7 Cast Additions Hint At Possible Premise!
Matthew Lillard. who played the crazed killer Stu Macher in the original Scream, has been added to the Scream 7 cast! And he’s not the only one returning. According to Entertainment Weekly, Scott Foley, who played Sydney’s secret half-brother Roman in Scream 3, has also signed on.
Both characters are dead (although there is arguably some ambiguity in Stu’s case), so what exactly is going on here? The Scream franchise doesn’t feature supernatural elements. It’s safe to assume that these psychos aren’t being magically resurrected. Is it possible that they never died and have somehow been hiding for all these years? Maybe, but that seems unlikely. I see a number of possibilities for what director Kevin Williamson is doing here.
The internet is abuzz with speculation that the new Scream is going to be like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, the 1994 film that featured the cast and crew of the Nightmare on Elm Street series playing fictionalized versions of themselves in the “real world.” This type of approach would fit perfectly with a postmodern franchise like Scream.
If they are going this route, I hope that they’ll also add David Arquette and Jamie Kennedy to the Scream 7 cast. Perhaps Rose McGowan as well, so that she can reprise her famous “Please don’t kill me Mr. Ghostface, I wanna be in the sequel!” line.
Of course, there are other ways that Lillard and Foley could appear. Stu and Roman could be featured in flashbacks, visions, or dream sequences. Perhaps Sydney is having nightmares about all the previous Ghostfaces that have tormented her. Or maybe this new installment will go back to the beginning and feature footage of Roman, Billy, and Stu plotting together.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out what Williamson has in store. Personally, I’m hoping for the New Nightmare idea. With Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega departing the franchise, there’s no way to make a direct sequel to Scream VI. Plus, we’ve already seen Sydney battle Ghostface in many previous movies.
A fresh direction makes sense. Scream 7 could feature a crazed fan dressing up as Ghostface and stalking Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and even the actors who played Ghostface. It would be lots of fun!
