Is The Presence Soderbergh Movie Worth Seeing?
Trailer #2 for the upcoming Presence Soderbergh film was released this week, and it’s just as creepy as the first. Some early positive comments from critics are shown, including a quote from Dread Central that says Presence “flips the haunted house subgenre on its head.”
I hope that’s true. There have been countless haunted house movies. It’s tough to find an innovative and fresh take on the concept at this point.
I’ve become rather bored with this subgenre, although there are some that I really enjoy. The Changeling, The Innkeepers, and the original Paranormal Activity come to mind.
It’s suffering. Just like you are.
Part of what intrigues me about Presence is that it’s directed by Steven Soderbergh, a well-known and experienced filmmaker who has never fully delved into horror before.
Why now? What is it about this story that has inspired him to give the genre a try?
The trailer effectively establishes the movie’s atmosphere without giving away too much. Neon consistently does a great job with marketing their films. There should be more horror movie trailers like this. In fact, ALL of them should be like this!
We see a family looking frightened. Items fall out of a closet. A woman, probably a psychic medium of some sort, tells them that they have a presence in their home. These are all typical haunted house movie scenes, but I have a feeling that Presence will have much more to offer.
The film releases on January 19th. Here’s the Presence trailer:
