Back For Good?

Universal gave us a lightning quick teaser a few weeks ago. Now it’s back with a full trailer for the much hyped upcoming sequel! Here’s my M3gan 2.0 trailer reaction.

As rumored, M3gan 2.0 shifts the killer doll from villain to anti-hero, with an upgraded version reprogrammed to take on a vicious new robot, Emilia. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprise their roles as Gemma and Cady.

The overwhelming success of M3gan (2022) made a sequel inevitable. The filmmakers decided to take an action comedy route this time. Comparisons to Terminator 2 (1991) are already prevalent.

That movie features a reprogrammed cyborg, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, protecting the future leader of the human resistance from a more advanced terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick).

That’s fine with me. Terminator 2 is one of my favorite movies. Can M3gan 2.0 replicate the original’s popularity? Let’s see what the trailer has in store.

Quick Takes on the M3gan 2.0 Trailer

0:01-0:15 – “I admit there were some bugs in my programming.” M3gan blames her creators for her murderous actions. I don’t think penance is part of her programming.

0:30-0:37 – M3gan as a “plastic telebubby” is pretty funny, but she’s not going to stand for being trapped inside a harmless body.

0:40-0:47 – Our first look at Emilia (Ivanna Sakhno). She’s much taller and more human-looking than M3gan. Since this movie is clearly inspired by T2, it would be fun if Emilia has some of the T-1000’s powers, like the ability to mimic other people.

1:08 – 1:25 – M3gan and Gemma argue about using her to fight Emilia. Gemma understandably doesn’t trust M3gan, but the doll dismisses her concerns. My guess is M3gan will legitimately try to take down Emilia. Of course, she could turn against Allison and Cady afterward.

2:01-2:22 – The upgraded M3gan is ready for battle. Her pink armored suit and big eyeglasses are nice touches. She looks badass in a cutesy sort of way. And she can fly, like Neo in The Matrix!

2:36 – 2:41 – Quick shots of a battle between M3gan and Emilia. Hopefully there will be lots of killer girl doll robot combat!

If M3gan 2.0 meets or surpasses the success of the original, this will likely turn into a long-running franchise. Universal could even make a Chucky vs. M3gan movie. They own the rights to both characters.
