My Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer Reaction

The seventh installment of the Jurassic Park/World series is headed to theaters this July. The dino franchise has become an iconic summer popcorn series, often leaving a Brontosaurus-sized impact at the box office. Universal released the first images last summer. Now the initial trailer for the upcoming sequel has dropped. Here is my Jurassic World Rebirth trailer reaction.
This installment features a group of operatives who journey to the remote island that hosted the original dinosaur research facility. They want to use dinosaur DNA to create a pharmaceutical drug that could save millions of lives. Can they avoid getting eaten in the process?
Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey co-star. This movie appears to be taking a retro approach that recalls the first two films, Jurassic Park (1993) and Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1996). In fact, the screenwriter of both, David Koepp, was rehired to scribe this new installment.
There are also reports that the movie will include material from the original Michael Crichton novel that was left out of the previous film adaptions. It’s directed by Gareth Edwards, who has experience with monster movies. He helmed Godzilla (2014).
Will Jurassic World Rebirth be able to recapture the magic of the original movie? Well, I was a huge fan of dinosaurs as a kid, and seeing a T-Rex chomp on people still entertains me as an adult. But there have been seven of these movies and, if you ask me, the series has lost much of its mojo over the years. The novelty of seeing dinosaurs battle people in the modern world has long since worn off.
Having the characters head back to the original location seems kind of desperate, as if the filmmakers have run out of ideas. Still, this movie will be worth watching if it gives us characters that we care about. That’s rarely been a strength of this series. At the very least, let’s hope it’s better than Jurassic Park III!
Jurassic World Rebirth is stomping into theaters on July 2nd. Here’s the trailer:
