Sony has released the latest, and probably last, trailer for the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025). This is looking like a virtual remake of the first movie.

It’s a sequel, though, as evidenced by the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., whose now middle-aged characters are here to give advice to a new generation of fresh-faced teens who are being tormented by The Fisherman.

IKWYDLS has never been one of my favorite franchises. The first movie was pretty good. I hated I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and the little-seen direct-to-DVD third movie, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. The new one acknowledges the events of I Still Know but ignores the third.

This latest installment will likely be better than the previous sequels, but that’s a low bar to clear.

Quick Takes on the I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 Trailer

0:01-0:20 We open at a wedding shower, where Danica (Madelyn Cline), a beautiful rich blonde, is opening gifts. She opens a letter, expecting money or a check (WTF? Who writes checks anymore?!) inside, and instead finds one of those infamous “I know what you did last summer” letters.

Yep, The Fisherman is still old school. Why bother with email, social media, or texting when you can send your next victim a simple handwritten note?

0:21-0:32 Now we flash back to 4th of July 2024. Danica (presumably this movie’s final girl) and her friends find themselves in a very familiar predicament involving a car crash hit and run. I was hoping this movie would feature a different type of “accident”, but they’ve apparently decided to repeat the first film.

Danica screams “Daddy!” Is her father the victim? That would spice things up a bit.

0:51-01:09  This part repeats footage from the teaser of Danica’s fiancée being brutally eviscerated by The Fisherman. Danica seems like the stereotypical bratty trust fund kid. Morally gray final girls are usually fun. The trope of the “pure” final girl is super stale at this point.

1:20-1:23  Ray (Freddie Prinze. Jr) is now the owner of a bar that he has creatively named Ray’s Bar. He seems reluctant to help the teens, similar to Dewey in Scream (2022). And we all remember what happened to Dewey in that movie…

1:31-1:39  Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) makes her first appearance. She seems to be on a college campus. It would be fun if she is a professor of urban legends or something like that.

2:17 -2:20  The Fisherman flashes his hook and Julie says her most famous line from the original:  “What are you waiting for?” This is edited to seem like Julie is speaking to The Fisherman, but I think it’s been cut in a misleading way.

I’m intrigued to find out how this movie will perform. The series hasn’t had a theatrical installment since 1998. Can it make a triumphant return, like Final Destination did? I’m skeptical that there’s a huge fanbase, but we’ll see!

I Know What You Did Last Summer slashes into theaters on July 18th. Here’s the trailer:
