I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) Review

There’s Something Very Familiar About This
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a sequel to the first two IKWYDLS movies, but it feels more like a remake. The plot is almost identical to the original ’97 film: a group of teens accidentally cause a fatal accident and agree to keep it a secret. Is it a worthy addition to the series? A year later, they get a mysterious card that says I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. Then a mysterious figure in a fisherman slicker slashes his way through the group.
Like the Scream legacy sequel in 2022, this brings back some of the characters from the earlier movies. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are back to dispense advice to the new generation of Fisherman victims. Ray now owns a seafood restaurant, and Julie is a psychology professor.
They’re not the only returnees. I won’t spoil it, but there are two fun surprise cameos, the first of which occurs in a dream sequence that’s the best scene in the movie. Stay tuned for a mid-credits scene for the second.
The main new character is Danica (Madelyn Cline), a ditzy blonde who is on the verge of getting married. She receives a note from The Fisherman at her bridal shower, and her boyfriend soon falls victim to the maniac.
One glimmer of originality this time is that the Fisherman starts off targeting people close to the main group, instead of just the secret keepers themselves.
Danica’s best friend, Ava (Chase Sui Wonders), is back in town for the bridal shower. She’s the “conscience character” of the group. There always has to be one person who thinks they should have called the police and feels guilty about keeping the secret.
In fact, all the main characters are the typical stock slasher movie archetypes: the spoiled rich dude, the angry tough guy, the rebel, etc.
The only real thing that IKWYDLS has to offer is nostalgia. There are constant references to the events that occurred in ’97 in the original film. The first movie was a big hit at the time, but it’s not like it ever reached the iconic status of Scream. I’m not particularly nostalgic about IKWYDLS, and I don’t think many other people are either.
I Know What You Did Last Summer concludes with a series of increasingly implausible twists that strain what little credibility the story had. These movies don’t have supernatural elements, but it’s hard to explain many of the events that occur in logical terms. The conclusion sets up a sequel that, based on this movie’s lukewarm response, probably isn’t happening.
rating

I Know What You Did Last Summer is a mediocre retread that doesn’t offer enough fresh ideas to justify its existence.
Rating from 1 (avoid at all costs) to 10 (masterpiece): 4
