Horror At The Box Office: The Monkey Shows Staying Power

The Monkey earned an estimated $3.9 million in its third weekend, dropping a reasonable 39% from its week 2 total. That’s a small decline compared to the 55% drop that the film experienced in its second weekend. That puts the Stephen King adaptation at a total gross of just over $31 million domestically.

This is a solid result for the $10 million budgeted film. Although The Monkey isn’t a runaway hit like Longlegs was, it nevertheless is drumming up nice profits for indie distributor Neon.

The lack of horror competition likely helped, as The Monkey was the only horror film to finish in the top ten this week. With little else going on for theatrical horror, it’s pretty much the only game in town right now. But more genre releases loom in the near future!

Looking Ahead

The Monkey should continue to reap grosses over the next couple weeks. My guess is that it’s week 4 drop will be similar to this week’s. Then Death of a Unicorn and The Woman in the Yard hit theaters on March 28th in horror’s first major head to head battle of the year. Here is my reaction to the latest Death of a Unicorn trailer.

The Jenna Ortega horror comedy seems likely to have a strong opening, and I wouldn’t be surprised if The Woman in the Yard becomes a sleeper hit. Then April sees a flurry of horror movies hit theaters, including the new Final Destination installment.
