Horror At The Box Office: The Monkey Becomes 2025’s Highest Grossing Genre Film

It was a quiet weekend for horror (and movies in general) at theaters last weekend. Still, The Monkey made enough to surpass the total grosses of its early 2025 rivals, and it has become the highest grossing horror film of the year so far. The Monkey has had a solid run. $50 million on a $10 million budget is a nice performance.

Although it’s gradually fading from cinemas, The Monkey added another estimated $2.5 million domestic grosses this weekend (its fourth in theaters), putting its worldwide total at near $50 million. That puts it in ninth place at the box office for the weekend.

The Monkey won’t reach the heights of Longlegs, but it’s still one of Neon’s most commercially successful movies. It will likely stick around theaters for a couple more weeks. No streaming date has been announced as of yet, but sometime in April is a reasonable guess.

The Monkey was the only horror movie in the top ten. Opus, an A24 film about a writer who becomes involved with a cult, sank like a rock in its opening weekend, with a total gross of about $1 million dollars. That landed it in twelfth place. This is one of the worst performances ever for a wide release.

How Long Will The Monkey Wear the Box Office Crown?

Probably not long. Death of a Unicorn, which releases 3.28, seems likely to beat it. There’s also the new Final Destination movie coming in April, and hordes of other horror movies getting ready to attack theaters later this year!
