Horror at the Box Office: Sinners and Final Destination Squeeze Out More Profits

As expected, it wasn’t a memorable weekend at the box office for horror films, with no new genre releases this week. Two big horror hits managed to stay in the top ten.

Final Destination: Bloodlines was the highest grossing horror film yet again, finishing in seventh place with a total of $3.9 million and upping its cumulative gross to over $130 million domestic and $271 million worldwide. Bloodlines has a $50 million budget.

Its gross is a drop of less than 40% from the previous weekend, an impressive hold for a slasher flick. I’m surprised a sequel hasn’t already been announced, but it’s nearly guaranteed to happen.

Sinners finished in tenth place, earning $1.47 million (48% less than the previous weekend) for a $275 million total domestically and $361 million worldwide. This makes an incredible 11 weeks in a row in the top ten. With the film now available on streaming, I don’t think its streak will make it to 12.

Finishing just outside the top ten in eleventh place, Bring Her Back grossed $1.41 million (a 60% drop from the previous weekend) for a total cume of approximately $17.6 million in North America and slightly more than $20 million worldwide.

Bring Her Back cost $15 million to make, not including marketing. It was never expected to be a major hit, but A24 was probably hoping for better than these mediocre results.

A24 can’t seem to catch a break this year in terms of their horror releases. While Warner Bros is raking in profits with its two runaway horror hits (not to mention the phenomenal success of A Minecraft Movie), A24 has seen one disappointment after another.

The indie studio did receive some buzz this week with the announcement that they’re producing a film adaption of the popular YouTube internet series The Backrooms.

Looking Ahead

Sony Pictures Releasing

Things spice back up next weekend with the release of the much anticipated 28 Years Later. It will face major competition in its second weekend from M3gan 2.0, which hits theaters on June 27th.
