Horror at the Box Office: Send Help Repeats at #1
Send Help remained at the top of the box office in its second weekend, topping a characteristically slow Super Bowl frame with an estimated $10 million. The Sam Raimi pic has grossed $35 million domestically and $53 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million.
Strong word of mouth is likely to continue to propel the movie forward. It dropped a respectable 47% from its opening weekend – not bad at all for a horror film, especially when it was competing with the Super Bowl.
The new indie French remake Dracula finished in fifth place with $4.5 million, a solid start for the domestic box office. The marketing has played up the romantic elements of the film, so that may play well next weekend for audiences looking for a spooky Valentine’s Day treat. Dracula has earned $34 million worldwide so far.
As expected, Strangers Chapter 3 had a tepid opening weekend, landing in eighth place with about $3.5 million. That’s a drop from the $5.8 million that Chapter 2 earned. Poor reviews make it unlikely it will have much staying power in the weeks ahead.
Up Next
Unlike last year with Heart Eyes, there is no new Valentine’s Day horror movie next weekend. Psycho Killer debuts on 2/20 and Scream 7 slashes into the box office on 2/27.
