Horror at the Box Office: ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Takes the Crown

Universal Pictures

Despite terrible reviews, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 easily topped the box office this weekend with a solid $63 million domestic gross. This is down from the original’s $80 million, but still an impressive haul.

The first movie fizzled quickly after its big start, and the same fate is likely to be met by its sequel, but nevertheless this is a strong start. It joins Sinners, Weapons, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and The Conjuring: Last Rites as 2025 horror films to rank #1 on their opening weekends.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 cost approximately $50 million and has already made an estimated $109 million worldwide, so big drops in future weekends won’t prevent it from drumming up a nice profit. The series is virtually certain to continue with a third installment and beyond. The franchise brand is so strong that it has become review proof and perhaps even word of mouth proof.

The only other horror flick to rank in the top ten is Predator Badlands, which finished in tenth place. It grossed about $1.8 million and has earned $88 million domestically. It’s worldwide gross has climbed past $177 million, making it easily the highest grossing Predator movie.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 benefited from a lack of genre competition, but that won’t be case next weekend. Silent Night Deadly Night premieres on December 12th. The audiences for these two films won’t necessarily overlap that much, so both could potentially do well.
