Horror at the Box Office: ‘Black Phone 2 ‘ Finishes Second

The Black Phone 2 dropped a respectable 52% in its second weekend with an estimated $13 million, claiming the runner up spot after being #1 last time. It’s grossed $49 million domestically and $80 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million.
This sequel is already in profitable territory and should be able to pass the century mark worldwide before it concludes its theatrical run.
It will be interesting to see what kind of boost it gets on Friday for Halloween. Although it’s not a huge blockbuster like Sinners or The Conjuring: Last Rites, Black Phone 2 has delivered a solid and much needed win for Blumhouse. A third installment seems likely.
Neon’s new found footage film Shelby Oaks premiered with an estimated $2.35 million in a limited release, landing in seventh place. It cost around $2 million to make, so this is a nice start. It also may see a spike in grosses on Friday.
The Conjuring: Last Rites finally slipped out of the top ten, but added another $730K to its total, good enough for eleventh place. It’s cumulative domestic gross is at approximately $177 million.
Up Next
Next weekend is quiet for horror releases, although some of the Twilight films are being re-released for the Halloween weekend. The Black Phone 2 should continue to perform well and Shelby Oaks could make an impact as well.
November tends to be a quiet month for horror. The next big release is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on December 5th.
