Horror at the Box Office: Another Weekend With 3 in The Top Ten
With no new horror releases, it was deja vu at the box office this week, with the same three movies earning top ten spots.
Showing admirable staying power, Final Destination: Bloodlines dropped just 40% and earned an estimated $6.5 million in its fourth weekend. That puts the smash hit at over $123 million domestically and past $257 million worldwide.
It finished in fifth place, making it the highest ranked horror film of the weekend. It is the highest grossing movie of the franchise – a remarkable comeback for the once dormant series.
Following in seventh place was Bring Her Back, which grossed $3.5 million for a total of over $14 million domestically. It’s made a smidgen of money overseas, putting at it just past $15 million total.
This is a respectable 51% drop from the previous weekend. The movie cost $15 million to make, so A24 is crossing its fingers that the film will show staying power in the weeks to come. Bring Her Back has received excellent reviews, but that doesn’t guarantee commercial success in an era of high ticket prices and easy home viewing.
This is the type of movie that performs better on streaming services. Many people (including me, honestly) aren’t particularly motivated to watch this in the theater. It’s not an “event” film.
The venerable Sinners landed in ninth place, dropping a solid 45% from the previous weekend. It squeezed out more profits from its lengthy theatrical run, sinking its fangs into $2.9 million and pushing its lofty domestic total to over $272 million.
It’s earned approximately $357 million worldwide, defying naysayers who said that the film was overpriced and would lose money.
Looking Ahead
Sorry for the short post, but there wasn’t much to talk about this week, and there probably won’t be next time, either. There are no major new horror releases next weekend. After that, the box office will become interesting again, with the release of 28 Years Later (June 20) and M3gan 2.0 (June 27th).
