Horror At The Box Office: A Quiet Weekend For Horror
Not Much To See Here
In a quiet weekend with no new horror releases, The Monkey added another estimated $1.5 million to its North American total in its fifth weekend, bringing it near $38 million domestically and $61 million worldwide. The $10 million budgeted film has earned a sizable profit, but its theatrical run is about over.
It finished in eighth place in a sleepy box office weekend, when nothing – including the new Snow White – did particularly well. The Monkey finished in the top ten yet again, but it was the only horror movie to do so.
A24 has missed the mark big time with Opus, which dropped precipitously from its already terrible opening weekend to make about $280k. It finished twelfth for the weekend. The film has a total gross of about $1.8 million. Opus is shaping up to be one of studio’s biggest flops ever. They’ll have to hope that their upcoming unicorn horror flick can make up for it. Speaking of which…
Calm Before the Storm?
Horror should get a box office jump start with the releases of A24’s Death of a Unicorn and Universal’s The Woman in the Yard next weekend! There’s also Neon’s Hell of a Summer on April 4th and Warner Bros’ heavily hyped Sinners on April 18th. For now, though, The Monkey remains 2025’s horror box office champ.
