Horror at the Box Office: A Quiet Thanksgiving Weekend

Predator: Badlands was yet again the highest grossing horror movie this weekend, making an estimated $4.8 million and finishing in fourth place overall. That’s a slim decline of 27% from last weekend. The domestic total is up to $88 million and it’s earned $173 million worldwide.

Badlands has a decent chance of hitting the $100 million mark domestically. It’s the highest grossing movie in the Predator franchise, but its high budget means that it will need to perform well on streaming in order to turn a nice profit.

I haven’t covered The Running Man much on here. It’s based on a Stephen King novel, but it’s definitely more sci-fi than horror. With so little else to talk about this week, let’s take a look. The Running Man is a big flop. It earned an estimated $3.7 million this weekend, landing in fifth place. It’s grossed $34 million domestically and $60 million worldwide on a $110 million budget.

This is easily one of 2025’s biggest box office bombs. I think this type of movie just isn’t popular right now. Like buddy cop flicks and gross out teen comedies, action hero flicks aren’t as successful as they once were. Also, audiences are probably growing bored with dystopian movies – there have been so many recently.

The Black Phone 2 finally slipped out of the top ten, landing in 14th place with $354K. It’s had a great run, but it will disappear from theaters soon. It’s made $77 million domestically and $131 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, handing a Blumhouse a much-needed lucrative win.

Horror at the box office is likely to get a big boost next weekend with the premier of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on December 5th. Can it recapture the original’s box office magic? Universal is hoping that the same director and cast can pull off another hit.
