Horror at the Box Office: A Quiet Holiday Weekend

It was a quiet weekend for horror at the box office over the Christmas holiday. The new remake of Anaconda is horror adjacent, I suppose, so let’s start with that. It posted a solid debut, earning an estimated $14.5 million domestically.
It’s already made $44 million worldwide on a budget of $45 million. Sony’s gamble with counterprogramming – releasing a movie like this in late December that contrasts with normal holiday season fare – has paid off.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 slipped to tenth place, declining 42.5% and earning an estimated $4.4 million. It’s made nearly $120 million domestically and is likely nearing the end of its profitable theatrical run.
Up Next

Things may be sleepy right now, but there’s plenty of horror coming to theaters in January. The year kicks off with the Daisey Ridley zombie movie We Bury the Dead on January 2nd. Other upcoming genre flicks are Primate and Soulm8te on January 9th, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on January 26th and Return to Silent Hill on January 23rd.
