Horror at the Box Office: 2 Genre Movies in the Top 5

Predator: Badlands was again this weekend’s top grossing horror film despite dropping a substantial 68% from its opening weekend. It earned an estimated $13 million for a domestic total of over $66 million and $135 million worldwide. It cost $105 million to make.
Badlands has a chance to reach $100 million domestically and $200 million worldwide by the end of its run, but it will need to show better staying power than it did this weekend. The lack of new horror competition in the next week, plus the long Thanksgiving weekend, could help enhance its chances.
The Black Phone 2 continues to show staying power, grossing $2.65 million, a respectable drop of 49% from the previous weekend. That adds up to nearly $75 million domestically and $127 million worldwide. That was good enough to earn fifth place, its fifth weekend in a row in the top five.
Further down the charts, Keeper finished in seventh place in its opening weekend with $2.5 million. The new Osgood Perkins film cost $6 million to make. The film’s tepid response make it unlikely that Keeper will have much endurance in the weeks ahead.
Up Next

The rest of the month is pretty quiet for major new horror releases. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 comes out on December 5th. After The Black Phone 2 brightened up a tough year, Blumhouse hopes to finish strong with two consecutive hit sequels.
Silent Night Deadly Night hits theaters on December 12th. That’s always been more of a niche series, so it will be interesting to see how it performs.
