Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 stomps into theaters on December 5th. I wasn’t a fan of the first movie at all, and have never played the videogames, but I remain convinced that this franchise can work. The animatronic monsters at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a Chuck E Cheese-style restaurant, have plenty of potential as horror movie villains. Let’s take a look at the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 trailer and see what’s in store.

Matthew Lillard, Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, and Elizabeth Lail are all back from the first movie. They’re joined by Skeet Ulrich, who is co-starring with Lillard for the first time since the original Scream. Set one year after the ending of the first installment, part 2 features Mike’s younger sister Abby (Rubio) returning to visit her animatronic “friends” at the abandoned pizzeria.

Like its predecessor, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is rated PG-13. I hope that it isn’t as tame and boring as the first one. There are plenty of creepy and effective PG-13 horror films, so I hope they increase the scares this time. Considering the power of the Five Nights at Freddy’s brand, the quality of the film may not matter. The first one made plenty of money despite its flaws.

Thoughts on the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Trailer

0:100-0:15 – Vanessa’s recurring nightmare from her traumatic childhood hint at a hidden past connection with the Freddy’s monsters. This installment is reportedly going to explore the origins of the pizzeria and Vanessa childhood will presumably be part of that.

0:55-1:04 – I know she’s just a kid, but Abby’s decision to go back into Freddy’s, especially by herself at night, seems remarkably foolish. I hope that the movie gives her some kind of valid reason for doing this, because it feels forced and contrived.

1:21-1:37 – The creatures leave the pizzeria this time and stalk through the town. Interesting! This could be fun. It reminds me of when some of the dinosaurs escape from the park in the Jurassic Park sequels.

My guess is this will be an improvement from its predecessor, but I would be surprised if it turns out to be one of 2025’s best horror films.
