Quick Takes on the Fear Street Prom Queen Trailer

-The trailer kicks off with the legendary ’80s track “Heaven is a Place on Earth” by Belinda Carlisle. This song always reminds me of the iconic Black Mirror episode “San Junipero”.

-0:00-0:09 – We open on May 23, 1988 – two days before prom, and exactly 37 years before this movie’s release date.

-0:10-0:20 – I suppose pranking your classmates by pretending to chop your hand off is a routine activity in a spooky town like Shadyside.

-0:25-0:32 – A seemingly well meaning teacher encourages a girl to run for prom queen. Why am I thinking this lady could be the killer?

-0:51 – 0:53 – A memorial mural for Camp Shadyside. This is a nice touch. It commemorates the bloody events that occurred in Fear Street 1978, confirming (if there was any doubt) that Prom Queen exists in the same continuity as its Netflix predecessors.

-1:00-1:03 – The killer’s red hood appears to be inspired by Don’t Look Now (1973). Interesting!

-1:14-1:15 – A menacing girl, likely a red herring, tells a rival “you’ll never be prom queen.” I expect this installment to supply plenty of suspects for us to wonder about.

-1:55-1:58 – Apparently disco balls were still popular in Shadyside in ’88. I thought they were more of a ’70s/early ’80s thing. Small towns often struggle to keep up with the latest trends, especially when the local residents keep getting slaughtered.

Fear Street: Prom Queen will stream exclusively on Netflix on May 23, 2025. Here’s the trailer:
