My Reaction to the New Drop Trailer
The Drop trailer has, well, dropped! Violet (Meghann Fahy), a mom who lost her husband years ago, goes on a first date with Henry (Brandon Skelnar), who her friend says has “been waiting patiently to meet you for months.” He invites her to dinner at a fancy restaurant – an odd choice for a first date between people who are meeting for the first time.
Also, who waits for months for a first date? That’s really obsessive and weird. The red flags are everywhere, but that’s just the start of Violet’s troubles.
She receives a series of threatening anonymous text messages. The situation escalates when Violet realizes that an intruder has infiltrated her home. The masked man is threatening her young son and the babysitter. The mysterious texter then demands that Violet kill Henry. If she doesn’t, her son will die.
The obvious conclusion is that Henry is some sort of psycho who is behind the whole thing, but I’m hoping that Drop will be more original than that. I would much rather see Henry turn out to be a genuinely good guy who just overcompensates on dates. Maybe he somehow helps Violet survive her predicament?
Drop is directed by Christopher Landon, who helmed Happy Death Day and Freaky. I really enjoyed both, so that gives me hope. Landon has shown an aptitude for blending horror and comedy in his previous works. The leads are a question mark. Fahy was in another horror comedy, Your Monster, recently. Sklenar was in It Ends With Us and has a major role in the Yellowstone spinoff, 1923. This appears to be his first major horror effort.
Drop is arriving in theaters on April 11th. Here’s the trailer:
