A Look at the Mysterious New Thriller

Companion is one of my most anticipated horror movies of 2025. The initial teaser came out three months ago. The full Companion movie trailer was released this week and it’s packed with intriguing new details.

Companion stars Jack Quaid as Josh and Sophie Thatcher as Iris. I figured that Thatcher was some sort of alien or android based on the teaser. The trailer makes it explicit that she is a machine, although it appears that she’s unaware of this at first. A robot who thinks she’s human? Interesting!

The trailer raises as many questions as it answers. As the movie’s title suggests, Josh apparently purchased Iris as a companion for himself. The exact nature of their relationship is unclear.

The trailer shows Josh with another woman, Kat, played by Megan Suri. She seems unnerved by Iris’s presence. “This wasn’t part of the plan,” she says.

It doesn’t look like Josh is just some lonely single guy who bought Iris for companionship (and sex). There’s clearly something more going on here, but I’m not sure what.

A Sci-Fi Horror Treat?

Iris reminds me of the lifelike cyborgs in HBO’s Westworld and the British series Humans. Perhaps this movie will have similar themes. If Iris is genuinely sentient, should she have the same civil rights as a flesh and blood human being?

The Companion movie trailer shows us that Iris becomes self aware at some point. She gains the ability to adjust her settings, kind of like the doll in M3gan. Iris enhances her intelligence and becomes independent.

The trailer then shows her going on a bloody rampage. Presumably she’s hunting down Josh and anyone else who has mistreated her.

2024 was a pretty good year for feminist horror movies (The Substance, Immaculate) and 2025 may be continuing that trend. I hope this movie is as interesting as the trailer makes it look! We won’t have long to find out. Companion is being released on January 31st.
