Are You A Friend of Frendo?

A new Clown in a Cornfield trailer has just been released! This one gives us a more in-depth look at the upcoming novel adaption. Here is my reaction to the initial trailer and my review of the novel.

Clown in a Cornfield’s protagonist is teenage Quinn (Katie Douglas), a Philly girl who moves to the remote rural town of Kettle Springs with her doctor father. Quinn is mourning her recently deceased mom, but she quickly makes some new friends (and enemies).

The local teens’ lives are upended one fateful night when a mysterious man in a clown suit emerges from a cornfield. Frendo uses a crossbow and other deadly weapons in a bid to wipe out the local teenage population.

My main concern is if the movie will have the guts to retain the book’s political subtext. There isn’t much of that in the trailer. Also, will it keep the story’s numerous plot twists intact?

Quick Takes On The Full Clown in a Cornfield Trailer

0:01-0:20 – The trailer begins with Quinn in the passenger seat of a boy’s car. He tries to impress the new girl by giving her a creepy Frendo wind up toy. I don’t recall this toy in the book, but it could be a fun addition.

0:29-0:32 – “They’re really big on tradition around here.” It appears that at least some of the generational conflicts in the book will make it to the screen. My guess is that the movie will keep the political themes vague, though.

0:42-0:52 – False alarm scare with Quinn falling for a Frendo prank. Seems like every slasher movie is required to have a scene like this.

1:07 -1:17 – Frendo teaches a man a lesson about the perils of lifting weights without a spotter. This wasn’t in the book, although it reminds me of a scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4.

1:52- 1:54 – Frendo giggles and cackles here and several other times throughout the trailer, a sharp contrast with his more serious persona in the book.

2:02 – 2:07 – Isn’t it amazing how cars never start when you’re trying to escape from a psycho killer?

My general impression is that the movie will be more of a conventional slasher than the book. But we will see!

Clown in a Cornfield hits theaters on May 9th. Here’s the trailer:
