Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco) are driving to Nicky’s family’s vast forest estate for their wedding. The happy couple is looking forward to a life together. He’s rich, she’s beautiful, and (hopefully more importantly) they seem to genuinely love each other.

We already know that their wedding is not going to go as planned. The very first scene of the series features brief footage of a wedding bloodbath, although the explicit details of what’s happening, and why, are kept from us.

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen has more twists than a pretzel. Its story uncoils at a deliberate and sometimes excessively slow pace. It’s not until the fourth episode that the plotline truly comes into focus. Something very bad does indeed happen in the eighth and final episode, but the series keeps us guessing the whole way through about what exactly this ominous event will entail.

The star of the show is Camila Morrone, who delivers what should be a career breakthrough performance. Rachel is easily the most realistic and believable character in the series. I was rooting for her throughout, although (like Nicky’s family), I wasn’t sure if her intentions were benign or malevolent.

She is accused of being narcissistic and even Satanic by some of her fiancée’s relatives. Perhaps they have a point. Or maybe not. If you get frustrated with a show that’s constantly swerving in different directions, this is not for you. Personally, I found it entertaining.

Rachel was the only character who made me care whether she lived or died, but sometimes all you need is one for the story to be engaging. I found her likeable and compelling (and very attractive of course). On the other hand, she’s not the sharpest pencil in the box. In a show filled with people who screw up their lives with idiotic mistakes, Rachel is responsible for some of the worst errors.

Adam DiMarco is good as Nicky, whose sheltered upbringing has left him unprepared to face many of life’s challenges. He has a history of being coddled by his mother, Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who is terminally ill and wants to live long enough to see the wedding.

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is many things. It’s a tragic love story, a supernatural horror tale, and a dark exploration of trying to find your soulmate. It’s also kind of flabby. This show didn’t need eight episodes. Five or six would have been fine. When a show hypes up its ending as much as this one does, it’s a lot to ask for us to wait so long to get to the climax.

That said, I was mostly satisfied with how this one wrapped up. It certainly doesn’t skimp on the gore and the carnage. Weddings have long been disaster zones in horror fiction, and this is the most bloody one I’ve ever seen.
