Horror at the Box Office: Two Genre Films in the Top Ten

Predator: Badlands was against the top-grossing horror film at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $6.25 million. That’s a respectable 50% drop from the previous weekend. It finished in third place. Badlands has grossed over $76 million domestically and approximately $160 million worldwide.

It cost $105 million to make, but that doesn’t count marketing and distribution costs. Disney gambled with such a large budget for a franchise that hadn’t had a theatrical release in several years. Badlands is going to have an uphill climb recouping its total costs in theaters, but its positive reception and status as a member of a popular franchise means its long term prospects are good.

In perhaps its last weekend in the top ten, The Black Phone 2 grossed an estimated $1 million and finished in ninth place. Incidentally, the sequel has grossed almost exactly the same amount domestically as Predator Badlands (about $76 million).

Unlike Badlands, though, The Black Phone 2 has already turned a healthy profit. It’s grossed $130 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.

Keeper landed outside the top ten, finishing 12th with an estimated gross of $600,000. That’s a precipitous decline of 76% from opening weekend. The film has earned $3.9 million domestically and a little over $4 million worldwide.

It cost $6 million to make. The small budget keeps this from being a major flop, but I think it’s fair to say that Neon is disappointed with these numbers. Maybe Keeper will perform better on streaming.
