Horror at the Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Finishes 2nd in Third Weekend

Weapons finished in the runner up spot in its third weekend of release. Although it didn’t manage to threepeat at #1 (Sinners remains the only 2025 horror movie to achieve that), Weapons had another strong weekend, grossing an estimated $15.6 million, a drop of only 36% percent from week 2.

Its domestic total has surged to over $115 million. Weapons has grossed just under $200 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million.

The movie’s runaway success has given director Zach Cregger a major mainstream hit after his well received debut, Barbarian. It’ll be interesting to see how his career proceeds from here. Will Weapons become a franchise?

Other than Weapons, there’s little to discuss. Together managed to squeeze out a few more bucks and has now earned about $21 million. Hellhouse LLC: Lineage made about $150k in a very limited release. Reviews have been awful. Moving away from found footage doesn’t seem to have paid off. I think this movie will escape theaters and find a home on Shudder very quickly.

The Witchboard remake has flopped spectacularly. It’s grossed about $250,000 on a budget of $15 million. Ouch! That makes Death of a Unicorn and M3gan 2.0 look like huge hits. I honestly can’t imagine why anyone thought there was a demand for another Witchboard movie.

The August doldrums that I talked about last week are certainly in full force, with the big summer hits slowly fizzling out of theaters and the summer movie season winding to a close. This has no doubt helped Weapons thrive. Releasing this movie in August was a genius move. It might have gotten lost in the shuffle if it hit theaters in October.

The Toxic Avenger reboot, starring Peter Dinklage as the title character, mutates into theaters next weekend. Can it mop up the competition? Reviews have been surprisingly strong. There’s also Somnium, a horror flick set in a sleep clinic. It seems to have Nightmare on Elm Street vibes.
