There aren’t a whole lot of horror movies set on New Year’s Eve. The few genre flicks that do make use of this holiday are an odd bunch, to say the least.

I’ve always loved holiday-themed horror movies. They’re dependably entertaining, even when they’re bad. This trio is filled with unintentional humor, and feature very few scares, but if you’re looking for mindless entertainment, there’s plenty to find here.

Let’s take a super quick look at one of the few holidays I haven’t yet covered on here! Here are three bonkers New Year’s Eve horror movies that truly have to be seen to be believed. They’re all from the ’80s, because of course they are.

Warning: Watching these movies sober may be hazardous to your health.

Bloody New Year (1987)

The first, and worst, is Bloody New Year, a laughable mess about a group of young British friends who get trapped in a time warp at a haunted hotel.

The building is haunted by a group of New Year’s Eve partygoers who mysteriously disappeared back in 1959. This movie has some of the worst special effects I’ve ever seen, even by the standards of low budget ’80s horror.

Along with the ghosts, a weird seaweed monster is also lurking around for some reason. One of the girls becomes a crazy zombie after a dude punches her in the chest.  Another gal is attacked by a wooden stair banister bird. You deserve an award if you can figure out what the hell is going on in this movie.

New Year’s Evil (1980)

The Cannon Group Inc

This one’s about a radio DJ at a New Year’s Eve concert who receives a series of creepy phone calls from a serial killer. The masked maniac is killing one person per hour leading up to midnight. This movie works great as an unintentional comedy, especially if you’re inebriated.

New Year’s Evil is filled with cheesy new wave punk rock songs that are played again and again. It’s also got a ridiculously over the top performance by the actor who plays the killer.

His “scary” voice is unintentionally hilarious. So is his mask. Did the filmmakers really think that this face would scare anybody?

Terror Train (1980)

20th Century Fox

A group of college students, one of whom is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, decide to throw a New Year’s Eve costume party on a train. Unfortunately for them, a killer in a Groucho Marx mask is lurking inside.

Gee, could this rampage have any connection to the nerdy kid who was the victim of a grotesque hazing prank three years earlier?

The characters are hilariously stupid. The killer puts on his hand on a guy’s shoulder and the dude just assumes that it’s his friend, never bothering to actually look up before the killer cuts his head off.

Besides JLC, Terror Train is remembered, if it is remembered at all, for the bizarre decision to feature famous professional magician David Copperfield. He’s pretty much playing himself. Copperfield performed live magic tricks for the film, but no one noticed or cared.

Happy New Year!
