2025 Mid-Year Review

Six Months Down, Six More to go!
Can you believe it? We’re halfway through 2025 already! With the year nearing its midpoint, it’s time to take a quick look back at what’s transpired in horror over the past six months. At the end of each year, I make a top ten best list. 2024’s can be found here.
I’m going to take a stab at ranking my top five horror films for the first half of ’25, while also naming the worst, most surprising, and most disappointing movies of the year thus far.
My Top 5 Best Horror Movies of the First Half of ’25
5. Death of a Unicorn

It may have flopped in theaters, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the hell out of this unicorn rampage. Full review here.
4. Dead Mail

An odd, innovative, strangely fascinating ’80s throwback. Full review here.
3. Final Destination: Bloodlines

An inventive thriller that surpasses all previous Final Destination sequels. Full review here.
2. Companion

Creative, funny, well acted, and filled with relevant themes. Full review here.
1. Sinners

An exquisitely filmed, richly told magnum opus. Full review here.
Other Awards
Biggest Surprise: Dead Mail
Biggest Disappointment: Fear Street: Prom Queen
Worst Movie: Wolf Man
The year end top ten rankings are likely to be significantly different, although Sinners, Companion, and Final Destination: Bloodlines are virtual locks to appear. I haven’t seen 28 Years Later or M3gan 2.0 yet.
I hope that the second half of 2025 is filled with quality films for us horror fans!
